A
reconnection of the City of Hamilton to its harbour will be instrumental in the
renaissance of the city overall.
The harbour has always played an important role in the city's industry, but unfortunately
many citizens experience a physical and visual disconnection from their waterfront,
having been forced to turn their back on the natural resource which gave birth
to their city. The appropriate nickname of 'Steeltown' has been ingrained in the
minds of local citizens, and remains the national image of the city. While it
would be unreasonable to ignore the important role that steel has played in Hamilton's
development, it should not be the city's defining characteristic, as the steel
industry itself was dependant on the existence of the harbour. The natural terrain
of the city, including the waterfront, represents the beauty of Hamilton, the
reason why explorers decided to settle here in the first place. The proposed redevelopment
plan is an attempt to create a west harbourfront which reacquaints Hamilton with
its former self: a Baycity.
